There are three main areas of concern with business networks:
Design - Each network is unique based on the goals, objectives and data processing goals of the business. Design takes into account current capacity as well as projected growth requirements. The key to effective design is optimizing the resources available, including budgetary constraints, to insure that the network is not over-engineered or under-designed.
Security - Perhaps the most overlooked element of the network is security. Today's threat are everpresent and absolute business killers. Without adequate internal physical and electronic security, and external intrusion detection, the network is vulnerable to catastrophic attacks.
Data Integrity/Disaster Recovery - The statistics are clear. A 2008 survey of 5000 small businesses revealed:
- Close to one in five (18 percent) do not back up data at all.
- Just over half (52 percent) claim to burn important files on a removable media device (e.g. DVD-R, CD-R discs, tapes, removable disk drives, external hard drives, etc.) in order to keep data secure.
- Only 11 percent keep copies of this data at an off-site location.
- Forty-two percent of businesses do not know how much it would cost to adequately prepare for a disaster.
The bottom line is that of those businesses that experience a disaster and have no emergency plan, 43 percent never reopen. Of those that do reopen, only 29 percent are still operating two years later, according to the survey.
